The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified stress among healthcare workers, leading to crises of occupational stress and moral integrity. American physicians were already at high risk for poor professional wellbeing; new working conditions imposed by COVID-19 have exacerbated these risk factors. Furthermore, the moral dimensions of this workplace stress remain under-explored. With funding from the Greenwall Foundation and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Study to Examine Physicians’ Pandemic Stress integrates qualitative interviews with conceptual analysis to investigate moral and occupational stress experienced by physicians working on the front lines of COVID-19 care in four American cities.
